Medic Alert Message
As a registered nurse in an
emergency department, I’ve
assisted patients with diabetes
on many occasions, often due to
hypoglycemic emergencies. If
someone is wearing a medic alert
bracelet, it cuts our guesswork
and lets us give life-saving
treatment quickly. I care because
I’m a health-care professional,
but also because I have diabetes,
too. I’m 34 years old and have had
diabetes for more than 25 years.
In 1989, as a senior in high
school, I developed hypoglycemia
while in class. My teacher noticed
my medic alert bracelet, so the
school called an ambulance, and I
was taken to the emergency room.
I still wear a medic alert
bracelet and believe it saved
my life. Please encourage your
readers with diabetes to wear
medic alert identification saying
they have diabetes. It might save
their lives one day, too.

I’m so thankful. Your magazine
makes me feel there is abundance
and joy in life yet. I love the layout,
the pictures, the illustrations,
and, of course, the recipes. I’m a
loyal subscriber now.

Love the Q&A
I really like your

Correction
We need to clarify a few points in
our inhaled insulin story in our
summer issue. Exubera is a fine,
dry insulin powder in a blister
pack, not a tablet (one pack equals
about three units of rapid-acting
insulin; three packs equals about
eight). The chamber needs to be
cleaned once a week, not daily.

bam—I get the news. It sounds
funny, but when I first found out, I
thought I could only eat bread and
water. You showed me otherwise.
Editor’s note: We’re glad you like
our “Ask Our CDE” feature. In this
issue, you’ll meet our new certified
diabetes educator, Madhu Gadia,
R.D., CDE, who recently joined our
staff and is now answering your
questions about diabetes.
