New Long-
Acting Insulin
Approved by the
FDA in 2005, insulin
detemir (trade
name Levemir) is
now available. The
effects of this clear,
synthetic, long-acting insulin can
last up to 24 hours,
so you only need
to take it once or
twice daily. In trial
studies, more than
6,000 participants
experienced less
weight gain and
hypoglycemia
than are com mon
with other insulin
therapies. You
can use it alone, in
combination with
oral medications,
or with short-acting insulin . It
can’t be used in
insulin pumps.
Smoking Tied to Diabetes Risk
Smokers are three times more likely to develop type 2
diabetes than nonsmokers, researchers found after following
900 adults without diabetes for five years. Participants
included Caucasian, African-American, and Latino men and
women ages 40 to 69. About
25 percent of the smokers developed
type 2 diabetes, compared with
14 percent of the nonsmokers.
The good news—quitting
smoking seems to lower the
risk of diabetes to the same
level as for nonsmokers.
