Right-Size
Your Meal
Resist the urge to overeat by dishing up sensible servings.
by CONNIE CRAWLEY, M.S., R.D.
iIn today’s world of
double-patty burgers,
soft drinks by the quart,
value meals, and all-you-can-eat buffets, it’s
difficult to remember
how a reasonable
serving should look.
Counting calories, carbs, and
fats is only part of the weight-loss
equation. Judging portion sizes
by sight is another important
technique to master when you’re
trying to lose weight.
Even if you’re choosing
healthful foods, you could be
eating more than you need. By
simply downsizing your portions,
you can trim calories from your
plate and pounds from your frame
without having to adopt a special
meal plan.
Measure Up
Consult a registered dietitian to
find out how much you should eat
based on your weight, height, and
activity level. Ask for suggestions
on portion sizes, then measure
foods using measuring cups and
spoons or a food scale. After two
weeks, you’ll have a good idea of
how portions should look.
