If you could consult with top diabetes experts from around the country,
would you? Edgar Obregon decided he could use some help, so he signed
up for the BD Diabetes Makeover Program with the BD Dream Team. “A coworker at the
hospital suggested I apply,” says Edgar, 46, a medical technologist from Long Island, New
York. “They were looking for people with type 1 or type 2 diabetes who had an A1C of 9 or
above. Mine was 13, so I thought it might be worth a try.”
Edgar and four other Diabetes Makeover participants met one another and their
health-care coaches for the first time at a kickoff weekend in September 2005. Their
backgrounds were varied—a program officer from Florida, a librarian from Washington,
D.C., a salesperson from California, and a student from Wisconsin. But all had one thing
